“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?
Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and obeys
is like a man building a house. He digs deep and lays his foundation on rock. The floods come, and the water tries to wash the house away. But the flood cannot move the house, because the house was built well.
But the one who hears my words and does not obey is like a man who builds his house on the ground without a foundation. When the floods come, the house quickly falls down. And that house is completely destroyed.”
Wise and Foolish Builders
The strength and quality of a building mainly depend on its foundation. Anyone can build skyscrapers and buildings that reach the sky. But the worth and stability of the building can only be determined by the strength of the foundation of the building.
If the foundation is not strong enough to bear the load of the building, all the efforts and amounts spent on building the big structure become useless in a fraction of second. If it is built wisely, then it will stand strong testifying the wisdom of the builder for years.
In Luke 6:46-49, Jesus talks about a wise builder and a foolish builder. When they built the structures, both of their work seems to be great and strong. But the quality of their building and their wisdom will be revealed only when they face waters and wind.
The foundation on the rock
The wise builder built his house on the rock. The man laid his foundation on the rock which cannot be moved by any flood or earthquake. If a man could trust Jesus as his only hope, he cannot be moved by any powerful flood or storm.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. -Psalms 62:6
Before that, he dug deep into the soil to find the rock. Powerful prayer life and deep meditation of the word of God is a mandatory requirement to find the rock. Without this hard work and effort, no one can find the strength of the rock.
The wise man delights in the law of the Lord. He will always be willing to follow the statutes of God. His heart always rejoices to do according to the will of God. He won’t be a hypocrite who showcases his zeal for God to the world.
He won’t boast about his ability for his success in life. He won’t rely on his own strength for his career (Deuteronomy 8:18). He submits everything in the hands of the potter to mold him according to His great purpose.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law, he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. -Psalms 1:2-3
If the foundation of our family life or our business is laid upon the rock Jesus, then there will be no powers to overpower the strength of the rock on which we laid all our trust and belief. The life and success of the wise man who laid his foundation on Jesus Christ are clearly stated in Jeremiah 17:7-8. His growth cannot be restrained by any power of this world.
As he trusts in the Almighty God for everything, as his foundation is upon the rock, he won’t be moved by any strong stream of flood or heavy storm of this world.
You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You Because he trusts in You. -Isaiah 26:3
The world can see only the outward structure of the building. It may not be showy and magnificent. But the strength of the building is on its foundation which is on the rock under the soil. The wise man renews his strength in his Savior and will be a light to the entire world revealing the glory of God as a city set on the hill (Matthew 5:14).
The foundation on the earth
The foolish man builds his house with a great plan with a great design. The house looks beautiful and everyone praises his wisdom. But the strength of the building couldn’t be assessed by those who commented on his plan and wisdom. They didn’t know that he laid his foundation on the earth and not on the rock.
People looked at the outward appearance. But our God is the one who looks at the heart.
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” -I Samuel 16:7
When people saw this foolish man, they looked at his charity, how many times he fasts in a week, how much tithes and offerings he is giving to the church, and so on (Like 18:11,12). But they did not know the inner man within this foolish builder.
Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men.” -Isaiah 29:13
Even though he praised God and got nearer to God with his mouth, his heart was away from God. He laid his trust and hope on earthly things. He did not want to obey the word of God. He trusted his own strength in every step of his career and for every decision in his family life.
The foolish man laid his trust in people rather than on God (Jeremiah 17:5,6). He confessed that he trust only on God (Luke 6:46). But he never trusted on God’s strength for building his life – physically and spiritually. He trusted money for his business. He trusted his knowledge about the earthly things for all his decisions.
The strength of his hope was revealed when his life faced severe streams of the flood. When problems came, he went to the people on whom he kept his whole trust. But they couldn’t help him come out of the trouble. They went away from him. He ran to his own strength and knowledge to solve the problem. But it couldn’t help him get out of the problem. Instead, it increases his trouble.
Then he went to money and all the other sources he knows. But they are all temporary things and they couldn’t help him. And thus, he lost everything, and his showy house that attracted everyone fell down without the foundation laid on the eternal rock Jesus Christ.
Chosen builders of the kingdom of God
We are chosen to be the builders of the kingdom of God. We need to check whether we are trusting God for every move of our life or not. If a man is wise enough to trust God for everything and call upon His mighty name in times of need, he will never be moved by any tribulation or persecution that arises for the sake the spreading the word of God to unknown people (Romans 8:35-39).
Doing the ministry of God without obeying His will is useless and it is like the house of the foolish man who built his house on the earth without foundation. The man will be doing the ministry of God for his own publicity and name. He cannot withstand in times of persecution for the sake of spreading the word of God.
How do we build our lives?
We have the responsibility to build our families and our businesses with Jesus Christ as the foundation for everything. The strength and stability of the building depend on the foundation on which we build our structure. Trusting God for everything and getting His counsel in every move of life is necessary for the structure to stay strong in any storm and flood.
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. -I Corinthians 3:11
Here, Paul says that only Jesus Christ is the foundation on which a building can stand. Our life will be empty and useless until we put our trust in the cornerstone, Jesus Christ. Without the cornerstone in our life, we cannot stay stable in this world.Let us assess our lives on how do we build our families and our careers. This is the right timeaa to assess our spiritual life – how do we grow in spiritual life? Are we spending time in talking with God through prayer and are we hearing His counsel for our decision by meditating the word of God everyday?
Are we building a strong building which can withstand in any storm and flood? Is it worth and will it be able to stand in times of trials? Will God call us as wise builders or foolish builders when our work come before Him?
