Who is in God’s Family? – Mark 3:31-35

Sharing is caring!

Being a member of the family of an important person is an honor that brings respect and reputation in society. If we feel so excited and proud for being a member of an important person in the society which is a temporary one, how much more delighted and excited we have to be for being given the privilege to become a member of the family of God who rules the entire universe with His word? How can a person become a member of God’s family?

It is not so difficult to become a member of God’s family. If we could follow the instructions of God and be a person God wants us to be, we will be able to be a part of His family.

In Mark 3:33-35, the word of God says, ‘But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”’ In this Scripture, Jesus says that those who do according to the will of God will be His family members. Being a member of God’s family assures us eternal life and everlasting joy.

If we were once part of God’s family and now not doing according to God’s will and His statutes, then we will be no longer part of His family. Being a brother or sister or a close relative for the Almighty God is a privilege for which one needs to surrender their lives for what God wants to do with their lives.

If a person is willing to do so, God will be pleased and will be excited to call the person as His family member. Let us explore the word of God to know which makes us eligible to become part of God’s family.

1. Receiving Jesus Christ The person who believes and confesses the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of mankind and accepts Him as his personal Savior receives the privilege of becoming the child of God. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: -John 1:12 When a person becomes a child of God, he becomes the heir of God and gets the right to receive all His blessings as his own. God has promised to give eternal life to those who believe in Him as a reward (John 3:16; 1 John 2:25).

2. Longing for the presence of God Accepting Jesus Christ as the personal Savior and living according to our own wish will not retain us in the family of God. If we are in His family, we need to give Him the honor He deserves as He is the only one who deserves all glory and honor.

How much importance we are giving to His presence maintains our position in God’s family. In Mark 3:34, Jesus points out the people sitting around Him and eagerly hearing the word of God and said that they were His brothers and sisters. If a person longs to hear the word of God and accept them wholeheartedly, God accepts him as part of His family.

In Mark 3:20, it says that they followed and gathered to Him wherever He went and heard the word of God. They had such a thirst for the word of God. Sitting in the presence of God made them happy and gave them deliverance. So they longed for that. My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. -Psalms 84:2 If we long to be in the presence of God and thirst for the word of God which fills us with eternal peace and instruct us to be holy, God won’t feel ashamed to call us as His own brothers and sisters.

3. Protecting the Holiness We were all once sinners and we’re far away from the presence of God. But the blood of Christ made us righteous and holy. Thus we got the freedom to enter into the presence of God. Our God is Holy and wants His people to be holy and this is the will of God for all those who were redeemed by the abundant grace of God.

No one will be happy to be called a member of a criminal’s family. It will be considered to be a disgrace for the person. If we who were redeemed by the blood of God live an unholy life it will be like trampling the Son of God underfoot and insulting the spirit of grace. So we will be chased away from God’s family. Thus to remain in God’s family and receive eternal life, we need to protect our holiness and keep ourselves unspotted from the world.

Our body is the temple of God and we need to protect it from unholiness and fulfill the will of God. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, -I Thessalonians 4:3-4

4. Unceasing prayer life and giving thanks for everything Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. -I Thessalonians 5:16-18

As we were made righteous before God through the blood of Jesus Christ, we need not be sad any further. We have a Savior and protector who has promised us to give eternal life. So we have to rejoice always even in times of distress and hardships. We are not called to murmur for our sufferings.

We need to give thanks for everything, not only for blessings but also for our grief and difficulties. We need to take all our cares and needs to God through our prayers. It gives us peace of God that the world cannot give. This is the will of God and if we live like this, we will be in God’s family.

5. Bringing people to God’s family

God does not want even a single soul to be perished. He wants everyone to be saved and be a part of Heavenly kingdom which is the family of God. We who become part of God’s family are expected to bring more people into His family. We who tasted the love and grace of God need to spread the love of Christ through our characters and call people into the love of God.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. -I Timothy 2:3-4 We may judge people based on their outward structure and tell that they deserve to go to hell. But it is not the will of God. He wants us to pray for the salvation of everyone including our rulers.

They too need a Savior to redeem them from their sins and hellfire. If we share the gospel of Christ to unknown people and fulfill His desire to save people from hellfire, He will be proud to call us as His brothers and sisters. How to know the will of God for my life? Doing according to the will of God makes us the member of God’s family means we need to first know what is the will of God for us. God has a special and unique purpose for every individual.

So He gives specific talents and gifts for each person. They are not given for comparing the gifts and despising others. But they are to be identified and utilized for fulfilling the will of God for their lives. For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.- Philippians 2:13 Knowing the will of God for our lives helps us to live a purpose-driven life. It helps in the edification of our spiritual life and makes our lives beneficial to others.

God wants every individual to do His will and be a part of building the kingdom of God. To hear the whispering voice of God and to understand the will of God we need to leave behind everything that attracts us towards the world and divert us from doing the will of God as rubbish and run forward towards Christ (Philippians 3:8). Our minds should be renewed by the spirit of God so that we could understand the great will of God for our lives (Romans 12:2). God speaks to us through His word and leads us to be a light of this world.
