When you have decided to take out some time to fast, there are certain things you must do for your fast to be real and effective. Of what use is it for you to deny yourself of food, drink, good time with your spouse without getting the reward of your fast. Before you set out to fast, have an objective you want to use the fast to achieve. Do not just declare a fast for the fun of it but have an understanding of what you are doing and for what time frame. Periodically take fluid especially if you are fasting for a long period of time. This is to ensure you are fairly hydrated during the fasting period. This way you can better appreciate the fast and the result.
If you are married, it is important you ask your spouse’s permission before you engage in a fast especially if it will take a long time. This is to ensure that fast does not bring up conflicts in the marriage. It is also a sign of respect for your spouse. Seeking your spouse’s approval before a fast will put you two on the same page. “Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control” 1 Corinthians 7: 5. When couples in a marriage relationship are in agreement, God will always hear their prayers.
The Bible talks about how the Lord Jesus would often separate Himself to lonely places to pray. “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5: 16. This is how you should also fast. Separate yourself from every distraction when you are fasting. Certainly you know that your friends, television, your phone, children, spouse etc, will distract you as you fast. The best thing to do is to separate yourself from all of them so you can focus.
It is important you pray fervently when you are fasting. Not to pray while fasting will only amount to you starving yourself. If what you are fasting about is many, write them down so you do not forget. One after the other, pray with scriptural understanding. Interject your prayer with times your study God’s Word, worship and praise God and meditation. While you pray or meditate, be very sensitive to hear from the Lord because He will certainly speak to you. Ensure you have a note pad and pen with you to write down prophecies and instructions the Spirit of God will be communicating to you. “Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly inscribe it on tablets, so that a herald may run with it” Habakkuk 2: 2.
When you want to end your fast, do so with thanksgiving in your heart and mouth to the Lord. Celebrate the answers to your prayers even before you see them. Do not rush to eat solid or heavy food as you break the fast. Drink worm water of juice. After awhile, you can eat light food and then solid food.
