What it means to be baptized as a Christian?

Romans 6:4

Salvation is a spiritual thing. At rebirth, our spirit man becomes born again not our soul or our bodies. We obtain salvation by faith; “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast“(Ephesians 2:8-9).

Also at salvation a transition happens. We are translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God; “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son” (Colossians 1:13). One might wonder how come about our being in darkness, the bible says that the devil is the god of the world, he controls a lot of its affairs “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:4)

The word baptize is translated from the Greek word “Baptizo” which means “to dip” “to immerse”. This so import to God that even Jesus was baptized in spite of John the Baptiste’s objection “”Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented” (John 3:13-15).

Baptism is announcing publicly what happened within. It is the public show of our translation into God’s kingdom, our very way of partaking in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. It is therefore important how it is done. It goes beyond merely sprinkling of water on the individual but the bible recommends immersion into water. This because when we are baptized, we publicly declare the following – our victory over sin, and translation into the kingdom of light; our identification with the death of Christ, and finally his resurrection.

It is important you declare public your new position in God’s kingdom and your decision to stand for him. This world is ruled by the devil and you need to make it known that you are here but no longer of the world “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John17:16). Standing in the water signifies that you identify with what Jesus did on the cross which lead to salvation being available to all men” For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men”.

Also, when immersed in water, there is no breathing and you are completely buried signifying your identification with the death and burial of our lord Jesus Christ and with the benefits that come with it; “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4)

Lastly, when you emerge from the water, you are identifying with the resurrection of Christ and with the fact that he conquered death and gave us victory over it “But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57). This also is associated with the fact that we will be raised again from the death unto eternal life (Romans 8:11)

Jesus said this; “But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:33). If you are for him, you must declare it publicly to the shame of the devil. God wants us all baptized, and every Christian must be baptized.
