The world loves a good soppy love story One where the hero falls in love with the maiden and then pursues her, makes sacrifices for her, fights for her, showers her with gifts of love and in the end, they live happily ever after. The market is saturated with these types of films and books. With good reason. We are hard wired for love, humans need love.

When we look at the Bible, we see that it is basically a love story, a love story where Jesus is the Hero and we, the church, are the bride. Throughout the Old Testament we read stories of how God fights for the Israelites, he delivers them out of Egypt, and then again out of Babylon. Then in the New Testament we see the Hero, Jesus making probably the biggest sacrifice for love, he offers himself. However, not even death could hold him, could stop his love. He fought death for his bride and won.

Then when Jesus goes to heaven to prepare a place for his bride, he showers the bride with gifts. Gifts that come from the Spirit who is our comforter and our counsellor. Finally, in Revelations we see that when he returns on the clouds in the last of days, we, the bride, will be with him for all eternity.

Here are a few snippets from the love story, the Bible:

1. John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

2. Romans 5:8

But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

3. Romans 8:35-39

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Even as it is written,

“For your sake we are killed all day long.
We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Psalm 44:22

37 No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

4. 1 John 4:16

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

5. Ephesians 3:17-19

17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

6. 1 John 4:10

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

7. John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

8. Jeremiah 31:3

Yahweh appeared of old to me, saying,

“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love.
Therefore I have drawn you with loving kindness.

9. Psalm 103:8

Yahweh is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.

10. 1 John 4:8

He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

Never feel or think that God doesn’t love you, because he does. All you need to do is to acknowledge his love for you, believe that God loves you, daily confess it, and live a life that reflects the love of God before the eyes of your neighbors. Remember that God wants you to also love your neighbors just like he loves you. Go out today and love someone just as God loves you, even when you didn’t merit it.

God doesn’t just love us; he is love for us. That changes the whole meaning of love, and his love manifests in so many ways. God tell us that he has loved us with an everlasting love. It is this everlasting love that lead to God so loving the world that he gave his son to die so that we may spend eternity in the house of the Lord.

God’s love is so vast, so deep and so wide that we cannot escape it, “For I am convinced that neither death not life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of the God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39) and after reading that, why would you want to escape it.

Our God is full of love and abounding in mercy and his kindness knows no end. That is a legendary love story.
