You have probably heard the saying, ”Laughter is the best medicine”. Did you know that it is true? The wisest man to ever live says this in Proverbs 17:22 (AMP), “A happy heart is good medicine and a joyful mind causes healing”. Isn’t it amazing that we can find an answer to our questions or a solution to our problems within the Bible?
This rings true especially when it comes to health. Whether mental or physical health the Lord has graciously given us the help or solution we need. You can find eating plans in the Bible, “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.” (Daniel 1:12) and “Daniel, mourned for three weeks. He ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched his lips.” (Daniel 10:2), this particular one is known as the Daniel Fast. There are also exercise routines within the scriptures, “And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1) and “Run in such a way as to get the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:24)
We need to keep our bodies healthy, we are told to “Honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:20) because it is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Here are a few more scriptures that speak about health:
1. 3 John 1:2 ESV
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.
2. Proverbs 17:22 ESV
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
3. Jeremiah 33:6 ESV
Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security.
4. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
5. Exodus 15:26 ESV
Saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
6. Exodus 23:25 ESV
You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you.
7. 1 Timothy 4:8 ESV
For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
8. Proverbs 3:7-8 ESV
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
9. Proverbs 12:25 ESV
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.
10. Proverbs 16:24 ESV
Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
From these scriptures you can see that health and wellness is big on the Lord’s heart. This could be because when you do not have ailments and your body is healthy, then you mind is healthy. When your mind is healthy then your relationship with the Father is strengthened as there are no mental obstacles to hinder you building and working on the relationship.
The reverse is also true, when your mind is healthy you automatically want to keep your body healthy. The two very much go hand in hand. The good news for those who struggle to keep their bodies and minds healthy is that, the Holy Spirit comes alongside us. When we run, we don’t run alone.
The Bible tells us to heal one another by the laying on of hands, on many occasions throughout scripture there are instances where prophets, Jesus, the apostles or even just followers of Jesus healed people from ailments (or even resurrected them) through laying their hands on them. The Bible also tells us that if we need healing we should “call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14)
