“Do not be anxious”, “Cast all your anxiety on him”, “Anxiety weighs the heart down”. A quick search on the web around what the Bible says about anxiety and these scriptures came up. Anxiety kills our faith; it kills our joy and it kills our ability to hear the still small voice of the Spirit’s prompting. When we are anxious, we feed the need to be in control of our own lives. Yet we know that we cannot be in control, because a car can only have one driver. Either we are driving or “Jesus take the wheel”.
If you ask Jesus to take the wheel and drive then you have to have faith that he will drive well. Being anxious does nothing about the situation that you are in, it only serves to damage your brain and wellbeing. “Anxiety is the brain’s way of alerting us of danger,” Dr. Alex Anastasiou. Yet, when the anxiety is not addressed properly then this will make the symptoms of anxiety increase dramatically. Scientists have studied the impact of anxiety on the brain and have found that among other things, high levels of unacknowledged anxiety can lead to depression, loss of short-term memory and disrupted sleep cycles or even insomnia.
BUT!! Don’t be anxious, the Bible has many scriptures about anxiety.
1. Philippians 4:6-7 ESV
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
2. 1 Peter 5:7 ESV
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
3. Matthew 6:25-34 ESV
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. …
4. 1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
5. Philippians 4:13 ESV
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
6. Hebrews 13:6 ESV
So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
7. John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
8. Joshua 1:9 ESV
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
9. 2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
10. Psalm 55:22 ESV
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Being anxious often stems from fear, fear of the unknown, fear due to phobia or increased stress. With these 10 scriptures and the vast array of Scriptures in the Bible that encourage, motivate and uplifts us, we can be certain that “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,” (1 John 4:18). And we know that Jesus in his perfect love gave everything so that we could be free of fear, stress and anxiety.
In times when you feel anxious and helpless in your own mind, be encouraged that the Lord in “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (2 Peter 1:3) This godly life includes a sound mind, a pure heart and a strong spirit.
