How to Renew Your Mind as a Christian

When you get saved, it is your spirit that becomes a new creation and not your mind. This necessitates the renewing of your mind so that it can align with your spirit, and you can live a godly life. As a Christian, you are to renew your mind so that you can understand God’s will for your life. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). 

Being a Christian means that you live by the principles of the Kingdom of God and not those of the world. You can no longer conform to the pattern of this world because you are not of it. Jesus made it clear that we are in the world but we are not of it, and we should not place our hearts and minds on earthly things. For us to keep ourselves pure and our minds focused on God, we have to renew our minds and see things like God does. 

4 Ways to Renew Your Mind

1. Read the Bible

God gave us His Word so that we can live in the way He desires for us. The Bible helps us see things from God’s perspective and know what God’s will is for every situation we face. If you are going to understand the things of God, then you need to know His Word. Meditate on Bible verses every day and keep them in your heart so that you will not sin against God. 

Meditate on the Word of God so that you will know how to live a righteous life that is successful and prosperous (Joshua 1:8). God’s Word will give you the wisdom and strength you need for each day. Carefully considering the Scriptures will make you wise and discerning regarding spiritual matters. 

Reading the Bible will change how you think and you will begin to see many things in your life differently. A mind full of the Word of God is a powerful mind that has the faith to move mountains and believe God for anything. 

2. Change Your Thoughts

The thoughts you have carried with you from your pre-salvation days will not support your Christian life. They are worldly and do not support a godly lifestyle. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

Fill your mind with pure and righteous thoughts because what you think leads to your actions. If your life is to move in the right direction, your mind has to be renewed first. The Bible has many good things you can think about that will fill you with wisdom. When your mind is focused on godly thoughts, you will not allow it to go wherever it pleases. 

When bad thoughts plague your mind, think about all the things you can thank God for in your life. As you count your blessings, your mind will brighten up.

3. Set Your Mind on the things of God

Living in the world can fill your mind with temptations for all the pleasures the world has to offer. It is hard living among people who want to indulge in everything life has to offer and you can easily get caught up in an ungodly life. But when you set your mind on things above, where Christ is seated instead of earthly things, your mind will be in the right place (Colossians 3:2). If you are going to serve God then you need to understand His way of doing things and the things He desires for you. 

When you set your mind on things above, you can say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions and you can live a self-controlled, upright and godly life (Titus 2:12). Keep your mind thinking about Jesus and who He is to you and praise Him for being a wonderful Savior. Think about the goodness of God and how He has showered you with His unfailing love. Such thoughts will leave no room for negative and self defeating thoughts that cause you to feel depressed and discouraged. Positive thoughts will leave you feeling bright and hopeful in life. 

4. Live in Accordance with the Spirit

We have been born of the Spirit of God as Christians and are to live according to the Spirit. When we do, we starve the desires of the flesh which wage war with the Spirit. By living according to the Spirit, you will set your mind on what He desires and you will experience life giving thoughts and the peace of God (Romans 8:5-8). If your mind is governed by the flesh, your thoughts will lead to thinking patterns that do not advance your Christian life. 

A mind set on the Spirit of God is one that will please God and submit to His will. By focusing on spiritual things, you will increase your discernment and hear God with clarity. Avoid engaging in unwholesome talk which fills your mind with ungodly things and causes you to become more ungodly (2 Timothy 2:16). Our conversations should focus on how to live a Christian life that pleases God.

To live a successful Christian life, you have to renew your mind so that you can understand the thoughts of God. As a believer, you have the mind of Christ, and this can be your declaration when you feel like your mind is getting out of control. Your mind will be full of faith when you feed it the Word of God.  It takes effort and commitment to renew your mind because it is not easy, but with God’s help, you can make it. When your mind is healthy, you will be in good health and zealous for the work of the Lord. Guard your mind daily and watch over what goes into it, and this will improve the quality of your thoughts.
