How to be an Overcomer as a Christian

Sharing is caring!

The Christian life is not an easy one and it has many twists and turns that can leave you discouraged and defeated in life. Jesus said that in this world we will have trouble but we should take heart because He has overcome the world. He said in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” You can be an overcomer as a Christian with the help of Jesus Christ.

You are more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ who loved you and gave His life for you. This means that tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril or sword cannot separate you from the love of Christ, and this makes you an overcomer (Romans 8:35-37). The strength to get over the difficult things in your life will come from your relationship with God.

The Bible Has the Solutions You Seek

The Bible has solutions for everything you are going through in your life right now. God gave us His Word to help us when we are in trouble so that we will not grope in the dark in life. When you follow Jesus you will never walk in darkness, and you will always have His divine wisdom to guide you.

To overcome anything in life, you have to turn to the Word of God because it has the power to deliver you. As a Christian you cannot make it without your Bible because it is your light. Psalm 119:105 says the Word of God is a lamp for your feet and a light for your path. With God’s Word, you will not lose your way.

How to be an Overcomer as a Christian

There are particular Scriptures that will show you how to be an overcomer, and you can meditate on them and allow God to speak to you through them.

1. Having a Relationship with Jesus Christ

As a believer of Jesus Christ, you have what it takes to overcome the trials that are part of life. This power to be an overcomer comes from obeying His commands which are not burdensome. When you have a relationship with Jesus Christ, you have access to His power which helps you live a victorious Christian life. 1 John 5:3-5 says, “Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

You have the power to overcome anything that comes your way because you belong to Jesus. This truth should be deeply ingrained in your heart and mind so that when trials come, you do not shrink back but face them courageously. You are assured of victory every time because you have a Savior you can call upon and who will deliver you.

2. Overcome Evil with Good

Romans 12:21 says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” What this Scripture is simply saying is that when others mistreat, betray, hurt, and injure you, you are not to return their evil but treat them well. This is easier said than done especially when you are dying to put someone in their place, tell them off, or take revenge. To be an overcomer you have to forgive the evil done to you, and love and pray for your enemies.

It is only God who can make right what has gone wrong in your life and relationships. Taking matters into your hands will complicate the situation and keep you in bondage to your offender. Proverbs 19:11 says that your discretion will make you slow to anger, and your glory will be to overlook a transgression. If you are to continue to reflect the glory of Christ, you have to let go of some battles because they are not worth it. They will leave you bitter and affect your relationship with God.

3. Power to Overcome the Enemy

When Jesus left the earth, He knew that there was an enemy who would always try to destroy our lives and steal our blessings. This enemy is the devil who prowls around looking for who to devour. When he gains access into your life, he steals, kills, and destroys what is precious to you. The good news is that Jesus did not leave you at his mercy but gave you authority to deal with your enemy. “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; and nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19).

If you need to overcome attacks from the enemy, use your authority in Christ and command the enemy and his attacks to leave your life. Remember that Jesus commanded evil spirits and illnesses to leave and they obeyed His words. Declare the Scriptures over the situation that is bothering you and the enemy will flee. According to Mark 11:23, you can speak to the mountains in your life and command them to leave, and they will.

4. Spiritual Insight to Overcome False Doctrine

Sometimes we have to overcome false doctrine so that we will hold on to the truth. When you are listening to teachings on the internet from Christian ministers, it can be hard to know who is teaching the truth on some controversial topics. The only way to know is to test the spirits by which people speak to protect yourself from deception. God has given you His Spirit to help you overcome false doctrine and He will show you the truth.

Use 1 John 4:1 to test the spirits of others who want to speak into your life because there are many false prophets in the world today. God’s spiritual insight will help you guard against false prophets and teachers.

Conclusion

To be an overcomer, you have to use the Word of God to fight your battles and navigate the challenges of life. Life may not always be smooth but you can live a life of victory because God has equipped you to be an overcomer.
