Death is not a much talked about topic in Church or conversations with others. Many people fear death, and that includes Christians too. This is interesting because as believers, we have the assurance of eternal life from Jesus, and we are going to spend eternity with God. We will face death when our lives come to an end and it is a reality we can’t ignore. In this article, we will discuss how not to fear death as a Christian, and have the confidence to face it when the time comes.
Where Does the Fear of Death Come From?
Fear of death comes from a spirit of fear that wants to make us live a defeated Christian life. This fear should not be confused with the fear of God, which is pure. The fear of death is a diabolical one and comes from the devil. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” We have the power to remove this fear from our minds and rejoice over the day the Lord returns to take us home.
When we are not living godly lives surrendered to the Lord, we will fear dying because we are not sure whether God will accept us. Keeping your focus on God and living for Him will fill your heart with hope for eternity.
Jesus Has Promised You Heaven
When you accepted Christ, He gave you eternal life, and you don’t have to worry about where you will go when you die. Fearing death is as a result of doubting that you will go to heaven. God gave you the assurance of heaven in John 14:1-3. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
Jesus has prepared a place for you in heaven, and by meditating on the above Scripture, it will take your fear of death away. The enemy may feed you lies about your life after death, but the Word of God is the truth, and you should believe it. Jesus will be back one day to come and take you to heaven and in the meantime, you are to live for Him and remain in His love.
God is at work in you preparing you over your lifetime for the day you will meet with Him in heaven. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says that God will sanctify your spirit, soul, and body and keep you blameless at the coming of Jesus Christ. Take comfort in this Scripture because God will not leave you in your fear of death, but will continue to help you overcome it.
You belong to the Lord, and nothing in life or even death can separate you from Him (Romans 14:8). Belonging to the Lord means that you will be with him after your physical death, and have nothing to fear.
Focus on Why God Put You on Earth
God put you on earth for a purpose because there is something He wants you to do for the world. Your purpose is to provide a solution to a problem in the world, and it brings a sense of fulfillment for doing God’s will. Those who are fulfilling their divine purpose have the joy of doing God’s work on earth and look forward to their rewards when they get to heaven.
Completing your earthly assignment will give you a sense of fulfillment that will take away the fear of death. This is because you will be ready to meet your Creator, having done what He asked you to do on earth. When Jesus finished the work He came to do on earth, He said “it is finished” before he gave up his spirit (John 19:30). He had a sense of accomplishment because He did the will of God of dying for our sins.
When you look around the world today, you will find that those who are fulfilling their divine purpose do not fear death because they are living in God’s will. By doing the work God has given you on earth, you will have a sense of peace and no fear of death. Sometimes, we fear death because we have nothing to report to God when our time comes. But if you get busy with your calling, you will find that as you grow older, you do not have the fear of death lingering in your mind.
How to Overcome the Fear of Death
There are some practical steps you can take today so that you can overcome your fear of death.
Read and meditate on Scriptures on eternal life and let them sink deep into your heart. Jesus gave you eternal life and you will be with Him when you die. Declare these Scriptures over your life until you feel the fear of death leave. It may take a while but be patient with yourself.
Ask God to show you the purpose for which He put you on earth so that you can fulfill it. There is no greater feeling than knowing that you are in the will of God every day of your life. If you want God to welcome you into heaven as a good and faithful servant, then serve Him today.
Pray and ask God to take away your fear of death. You can also ask Him to show you why you fear death so much. Prayer is powerful, and God promises that He will answer our prayers and give us the knowledge and wisdom we need.
Focus on growing in your relationship with Christ knowing that He will give you rest and calm your fear. Nothing can separate you from Him.
