The word of God is powerful, which directs us to walk in the right path. God has given us His commandments and statutes to follow. When we submit ourselves to live according to the word of God, it will lead us to Eternal life and joy. If we keep the word of God in our hearts and follow them wholeheartedly, we will be the children of God and nothing in this world will overcome us.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12
The word of God talks directly into the hearts of the people without any discrimination. No one can escape from the power of the word which accomplishes the purpose for which God has sent it.
Doing the word of God brings blessings
God sends His words to correct His children when they don’t keep His commandments and statutes. As a hungry man dreams like eating, but remains hungry when he awakes, we cannot become righteous by just hearing His words that Holiness (Romans 2:13). But if we surrender ourselves to the word of God and repent back to Him, we will receive the blessings that the word of God brings.
But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” -Luke 11:28
God reveals His will through His words. When we do according to the word of God, our faith will grow and thus no storm or flood can shake our faith in God (Matthew 7:24,25). God has promised to be with His people if they obey His words and keep them in their hearts.
How people deceive themselves?
God talks to His people through Scriptures while meditating the word of God or through sermons or through someone they meet. But many times, people tend to be happy to hear the word of God, but they throw it away stating that the word is meant for someone else. Thus, they deceive themselves by not obeying the word of God that came to them for the purpose of renewing their minds and turn them from their wicked ways.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. -James 1:22
If we do not follow the ways that the word of God teaches us, even if have gifts of healing and working of miracles, then we cannot enter into the kingdom of God which is prepared for those who live according to the word of God as their reward (Matthew 7:21-23). People may praise them as great men of God and respect them next to God. But all these things are temporary and they cannot earn them the heavenly crown and eternal joy.
Why we should not be a forgetful hearer?
If a man hear the word of God and did not follow it, then he is compared to a person who observes his face in the mirror and then forgets his image when he go away from that place (James 1:23,24). If he could remember his image, it will be in his mind forever and cannot be erased by any other things he see.
When we observe our lives through the word of God which is like a mirror and correct our lives based on what we observe through it, that is according to the instructions given by the word of God, our lives become purer. If we do not forget the word of God, it will warn us when we do things that keeps us away from God’s kingdom. Nothing in this earth will be able to deceive us and separate us away from the love of God.
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. -James 1:25
The word of God is the truth which is the perfect law of liberty. When we know the truth and accept it, we will be delivered from the sin (John 8:32). When we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and long to become like Him and to reflect His characteristics in our lives, we will become more and more holy.
Why we need to guard our tongue?
The word of God says that death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). So we need to be extra careful before speaking even a single word (Psalm 17:3).
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. -Matthew 15:18-19
Our words come out as a result of our thoughts. If we could protect our thoughts to be holy, our words also become holy. The words that we use to express our unbelief will become true. So we need to confess words of faith.
If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. -James 1:26
If we boast about our faith on Jesus Christ among people and live a filthy life by being a talebearer who sow strife among people, then the glorious name of God will be blasphemed through our lives. So we need to guard our tongue with the help of Holy spirit so that our words bring glory and honor to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Set a guard, O Lord , over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. -Psalms 141:3
We should not get involved in unwanted conversations which defiles our soul. Our words should be filled with grace and should be wise so that we can answer those who question about your faith (Colossians 4:6). We should not get involved in disputes and let our words bring disgrace to our God.
We should not use bad words and our words should not hurt others. But they should comfort those who are grieving and bring peace and happiness in their lives. Our words should lead a sinner to salvation and edify the lives of those who hear them.
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. -Ephesians 4:29
What is true religion?
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. -James 2:26
Our faith should not be in words. Instead, it should be combined with works that brings us closer to God so that we become righteous before God (Philippians 4:8). When we guard our hearts with the word of God, we can protect our souls unspotted from the attractions of this world.
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. -James 1:27
The word of God instructs us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. People may say that they love God and live for Him. They may share the love of Christ to the people around them. But if they don’t help someone who asks them for help in times of their need, they don’t have love or compassion in their heart.
If they could not love their neighbor, they cannot love God as they do not reflect the characteristics of Jesus Christ in their lives (James 2:8-10). Thus, they deceive themselves believing that they serve God.
For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. -I John 3:11,18
Let our love be without hypocrisy. We should be able to forgive those who did evil to us. We should not be like the scribes and Pharisees lived in the time of Jesus. They teach many things to people. But they don’t follow them in their lives ( Matthew 23:2,3).
We are called to reflect the characteristics of Jesus Christ and have a compassionate heart to support widows and orphans in their needs and be a caregiver for them. As our God is a father for the fatherless, we need to protect them when they face hardships and their justice is perverted (Isaiah 1:17). Living a life like this is the pure and undefiled religion before God.
