I AM STRUGGLING WITH ANGER AS A CHRISTIAN, HOW DO I OVERCOME?

The Holy Spirit through the Apostle James lets us know God’s mind concerning man’s anger. He says, “For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God” James 1: 20. Can you see that? The Word of God did not say it is wrong or a sin to get angry, but getting yourself to be controlled by anger is what is wrong. “Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent” Psalm 4: 4.  So as a Christian you cannot have anger issues because excessive anger can only to evil. That is why you must prayerful ask God help you come out of it. “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil” Psalm 37: 8.

One of the first things you can do to overcome excess anger is to pray to God about it. Yes, God can help you out of the struggle with anger if you would pray to Him. The Lord Jesus Christ said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” Matthew 11: 28. The Lord is ready and willing to help you out of the anger burden so you can find rest.

Another thing you must do to take care of your excess anger is using the Word of God to work on your attitude. Excess anger most of the time is as a result of pride.  Work on your pride and learn to see things based on the Word of God. “And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?” Jonah 4: 4. A prideful person believes he is always right.  He sees only his opinion as right. He feels hurt when he is corrected or countered. So if you have anger issues, do well to work on yourself with the Word of God.

So many have anger problem because of the company they keep. The Spirit of God warns us about keeping the wrong company because they are capable influencing us wrongly. “Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man” Proverbs 22: 24. If your friends always use anger to get what they want before long you will tend towards using that method to achieve your goals too and that is wrong.

Foolishness is usually associated with an angry person. Here are just two examples. “Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools” Ecclesiastes 7: 9. Also, “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back” Proverbs 29: 11. Of course I know you do not want to be described as a fool. So reject anger from your spirit. Declare that you are not ruled by anger but love. Dealing with anger issue is what you can do deliberately. Talk to yourself and consciously refuse to be dominated by anger. “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice” Ephesians 4: 31.
