HOW TO SURVIVE COLLEGE AS A CHRISTIAN

Are you done with high school, preparing to college and the question “will my faith survive in college” keep coming to your mind? Then you need to read this.

Leaving home for the first time and going to a place where you will be out of your parent protection can be challenging and it won’t be easy at first. College can be a tough place for your faith to survive because your belief will be questioned or even mocked by friends, roommates, colleagues, even professor. But you don’t have to panic or be worried, here are some tips/ advice for you.

Be Prepared, Prayerfully and Mentally

Yes, you are going to face challenges, so you need to know that now and be prepared both prayerfully and mentally. Be prepared to defend your faith, to fight the good fight of faith (Timothy 6:12). Be prepared to stand against the schemes of the devil, so you need to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18). Your faith will be tested; even people will doubt your Christianity. Temptation will also knock your door frequently as you will be invited to all sorts of event just to test your faith. The journey of Christianity is a battle itself in addition to campus troubles, so be prepared as if you are going to battle.

Make Yourself Known

Do not hide it; let the people around you know that you are a Christian. Let your lifestyle also define you. Live a life of faith and holiness. Follow righteousness with people and show love to those around you. Even when they see your good works, they may come to ask you about Jesus. The bible tells us in Matthew 5: 14-16 that, “you are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven.” This scripture has said it all, be the light that you are and shine!

Build a Strong Relationship with God through Your Quiet Time

Do you know the stronger a relationship becomes, the harder it will be for anybody to just break in. Observing quiet time is one of the things we learnt from Jesus (Mark 1:35). Find a time to separate yourself even in your busy schedule to pray and meditate on the word of God. By observing quiet times you will find a constant source of comfort, encouragement, correction, inspiration, strength and energy. The bible even tells us that, quietness and trust will give us strength (Isaiah 30:15).

Go to Church Always

Fellowship is a very important part of our life as a Christian as it is a commandment from God (Hebrews 10:25). By fellowshipping with brethren, you will find other like-minded people you can talk to when you are lonely or passing through difficulties. Even Jesus promised to be in our midst when we gather to worship and pray (Matthew 18:20). So you really need to take fellowship serious.

Choose Your Friends Wisely

Who you choose to be your friend or spend your time with influences your character. There is a saying that goes thus, “show me your friend and I will tell you who you are”.

So choose your friends wisely. Choose a friend with good character. The bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that, “Bad company ruins good morals.” So you need to be careful who you make friends with.

I sincerely hope these tips/ advices will help you live a fulfilling life as you go off to college. The grace and the presence of God will go with you and always be with you.
