HOW TO STAY HOLY AS A CHRISTIAN
Let start by finding out the meaning of holiness; what it means to be holy. Holiness means sanctification, separated, set aside unto God. In other words, it means to be sanctified or separated unto God. Other synonyms are righteousness, perfect and completed, consecrated, hallow etc. So if God expects you to be holy, it means it is possible to be holy. “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1: 15 – 16.
Holiness is not what you do by yourself. It is God that makes you holy by Himself. He is the One that qualifies you to be holy or separates you unto Himself. “He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” 2 Timothy 1: 9. He made you holy before the foundations of the world. He knew you would become His special child even before the earth and the heavens came into existence. “And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified” Romans 8: 30.
To be made holy is a rare privilege but you have a role to play and that is by living a holy life as God wants. “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord” Hebrew 12: 14. Can you see that it is your responsibility to make the efforts to live in peace and to stay holy? The efforts you need to make will keep you in God’s perfect will. It includes living according to the Word of God. The Psalmist asks, “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word” Psalm 199: 9. He went further in verse 11 to add, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
Another very important thing you must also do is to avoid the wrong companies. If the people you mingle with are unholy folks, you cannot stay holy. This is because their evil ways will contaminate you one way or the other. “Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals” 1 Corinthians 15: 33. It is better to disassociate from anyone or thing that will cause you to stray from staying holy. Remember that you are the light of the world. You cannot have dealings with elements of darkness. “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” 2 Corinthians 6: 14.
If you must keep your faith and remain holy to the glory of God, your prayer life must also remain fervent. Do not fail to attend church services or neglect your local church activities like prayer meetings, evangelism, and other programs. The more you got engaged in these activities, the more secure you would be in faith and holiness.
