How to Quit Porn as a Christian

Romans 8:1, Psalm 18:32, 2 Corinthians 5:21

Some people just love watching porn occasionally, some engage in it habitually while others are addicted meaning that they will experience physical symptoms if they don’t watch Pornography. Whichever be the case, watching porn will always be lovable to an individual until he/she learns why it shouldn’t be indulged in and genuinely resolves for a change.

The fostering mindset. Among many other “seemingly justifying” reasons for engaging in porn like “I want to learn the act” and “it is just a movie” to mention but a few, many porn lovers think that it is at least more preserving to watch porn than engaging in the real act. This is especially common among Christians and moralist who want to keep up with high moral standards. Here is what Jesus thinks; “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Mathew 5:28 NIV).

You really don’t have to get to the act to have committed it; everything is possible once it has been conceived in the mind. Pornography influences your mind to think sexuality in a way that does not glorify God and Christians ought to desist from such act.

“Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17 NIV).

Why Porn is bad. An inherent part of porn watching is Lust. Lust is not of God; “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world”. God has seven Spirits (Revelation 3) likewise there are antagonist spirits like the spirit of fear, depression and lust. These spirits keep people in captivity and deny them the freedom that Jesus died for; this really hurts God. He wants us to be free from all satanic oppression and He gave His dear son for this.

Also, engaging in watching porn is sowing to the flesh and this will lead to destruction; “Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (Galatians 6:8).

Why is it so hard? Being born again is a spiritual thing, it has nothing to do with the soul. The soul is where our thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, emotions, will and even actions among others spring from. Actions are preceded by thoughts (Proverbs 23:7). Deal with the paradigms that produce the unwanted action and you will never see it again (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

Dealing with loss. First, you need to understand that you have God’s righteous and He does not condemn you since Jesus happened “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit”. Secondly, you need to address the Spirit of Lust by exercising your authority as a believer and your victory in Christ Jesus and commanding it to get lost, it will surely flee (James 4:7). Thirdly, you will need a lot of God’s Spirit. I put this ahead of making the decision to stop because of this; “…If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). You will need to depend a whole lot on God’s sufficient grace (2 Corinthians 2:9). Next, Get God’s word, stay on it and get revelations and make resolutions you must keep confessing (Hebrew 10:23). Don’t even let your faith dwindle; you were out before you even got in (1 Corinthians 10:13). Lastly, talk to someone. It could be your pastor, a professional Christian counsellor, brethren especial those mature spiritually or a friend who you can be accountable to. Do not let the devil have that secrecy he loves. Quitting is an option when it comes to Porn watching; you can do this!
