Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” Matthew 26:41 (NLT)
Jesus Christ gave us the wisdom for strengthening our spirit man, which is to ‘watch and pray‘. Watch and pray that you don’t enter into temptations, that is, you must be alert spiritually and prayerfully.
Being prayerful and full of God’s word empowers your spirit, thereby enabling you to say NO to temptation and sin. If you say you don’t have time to pray, then you surely have time to enter into temptations. Your flesh will never allow you to do the right thing. The only way to overcome the flesh is to subdue it in prayer and fasting. In prayer and fasting, you commune with God, which sharpens your spirit man.
The disciplines of fasting, prayer, watchfulness, and confession are God-given means whereby believer’s fight temptation. Fasting, never popular, and regrettably ignored, trains believers to deny themselves the normal comforts of eating and contentment for a season, so that they might seek God more intensely, express remorse and lament, humble themselves, and prepare for seasons of temptation.
Temptation itself isn’t a sin, but giving in to temptation is. We should always resist temptation, no matter how difficult it feels at the moment!
Even though Jesus is divine, we must not forget that he dealt with temptation just as we did! He came in human form and experienced all the difficulties we’ve experienced, so he understands our struggles!
Hebrews 4:14-16 (NLT) “So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing’s we do, yet he did not sin. So, let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most”.
The best thing we can do to resist temptation is to pray without ceasing and stay away from people or places where temptation may occur. This includes tv shows and even some music that leads you astray. Temptation is one of the devil’s greatest schemes to lead us astray, so we must fight it any way needed, even if that means a lifestyle change!
Never underestimate the power of the flesh, because the flesh is what separates us from God and our blessings.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure”.
God knows how to rescue his people from temptations. And further, by submitting ourselves to God, we may “resist the devil” and set him to flight as we work out our salvation in fear and trembling.
