HOW TO NAVIGATE DATING AS A CHRISTIAN

Sharing is caring!

Romans 12:9-10

The subject of dating has become not just interesting but also very sensitive in Christianity. The world as we know it is constantly drifting towards standards that comprise what Christ has laid down in almost every facet of life, dating inclusive.

Dating as we know it has evolved over the last centuries from a meeting where parents were involved in choosing a spouse for the sole aim of marriage, to the more recent meetings where singles hang out independently, unsupervised and marriage may never be in view. Dating is not wrong depending on how it is done which is the main focus of this text.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul writing to the brethren in Corinth emphasized very importantly how our bodies are to be used. Remember in Genesis 1:26-28, when God was about to make man, He said, “Let us make man in our own image and after our likeness”, pointing to the fact that we have been made in God’s image and likeness. Thus Apostle Paul writing to the church makes an important reminder that should guide how we use our bodies knowing that we are God’s image and our bodies are his. This means that all activities involving the use of our bodies must first glorify God. Dating is an act that relies on the use of the body, mind and emotions, and as a Christian, the first rule of dating should be that our bodies at all times should honour and glorify God. It then means that while dating, we should consciously set boundaries that will help us not to fall into divers sins such as lusts, fornication, Idolatry (placing our partner above God in our lives), etc.

Other steps that should be taken to date as a Christian includes:

Love genuinely as Christ loves (1 John 4:7-8). While the essence of dating is firstly to know each other better and consider your suitability as life partners, it is an avenue to show love as Christ did and still does. By doing this, you are not just expressing God’s nature, but you are also worshiping God.

Stand on God’s Word and principles (Colossians 3:1, 2 Timothy 3:16): Dating as Christians should be guided on God’s word and principles. This is what differentiates a Christian from a non-Christian.

Maintain Purity (Philippians 4:8): The text in Philippians 4:8 admonishes us to maintain purity in thoughts, words and deeds. As a Christian, our dating should be decorated with the virtue of purity. There are times when the flesh will tend to be weak, but our firmness on God’s word and purity standards will help us navigate these times to the glory of God.

Date with purpose (Eccl. 3:1): To everything there is a time and season. While dating is fun, engaging and interesting, it should be done with purpose, and this purpose should be genuine and according to God’s word. Date with focus and purpose as this will guide your actions, desires and desires.

We have been created first to worship God and this should be reflected in everything we do. Our dating activities, relationships, thoughts and life should honour God at all times.

We must understand that we are the Christ on earth that the world is looking up to. Whatever we do can lead people to Christ or away from Christ.

Stay Christ conscious always. Amen.
