Understanding Stress can go a help a great deal with managing it. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or suspense characterized (Advanced English Dictionary). Beyond mental and emotional effects stress has physical effects. A state stress especially physiological is sometimes a necessity. For instance, a woman needs to go through the stress of labour to give birth. And one needs a little more than basal mental energy to tackle a mentally tasking adventure like an exam. Stress like this often fizzle out on their own once its trigger is gone.
Notwithstanding, some people live in a state of perpetual and often unnecessary stress. This has negative effects on one’s health. This is because, stress leads to the release of a hormone, Cortisol which in return helps the body cope with the stress. When cortisol is being constantly released into the system, it can accumulate and begin overacting. This can lead to fatigue, irritability, headaches, organ and tissue damage, reduced immunity which exposes the individual to multiple microorganisms that can cause illness, weight gain, low productivity, anxiety, and depression among others.
God doesn’t want us ill, especially when it self- induced. Hence we must say no to living in a state of perpetual stress. ”Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2).
Sometimes stress can be triggered by something completely out of our control and at other times it is caused by the individual and most times could have been avoided. Things like the bereavement can cause stress and in most cases we have no control over such events. On the other hand, things like being unprepared for an exam, having a deadline to meet up with among others can trigger stress and in most cases could have been avoided.
For stress inspired by uncontrollable triggers, Trust God. You have got to release yourself and trust god because first, he already has a way out for you and have to stay calm to find it (1 Corinthians 10:13). Secondly, He will ensure your peace is intact shutting the door against negative emotions like fear. Lastly, he will give you inner strength. To go through. Strength comes in different forms, Joy, faith, all to make you go through smoothly. So trust him
For stress inspired by controllable circumstance, change your lifestyle. Improper time, procrastination and laziness are often at the root of the matter. We actually do reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7); you get out of life what you give. If you procrastinate a lot, your work will soon pile and you will have no option. Why not live proactively? Don’t just do what is required now, tackle things that will be required in the future and seat back and enjoy the stress free future. Learn time management principles and apply yourself accordingly. Deal with laziness, ask God to help you (Mathew 7:7) and make efforts to learn how to overcome it. You can live a life free of stress if you learn to tackle things ahead of time or on time. It is a beautiful way to live. In summary stress can either be or not be avoidable, in either case, it should be managed well.
