How to go through Hard times as a Christian

1 Corinthians 10:13, John 16:33

Most times, event around our lives are just normal or routine. At other times we have happy moments; we move from one progress to the other, from one testimony to the other. There are also times when it is as though the universe is against us and God is silent. It happened to Job; he was a star until he lost everything in one day. In hard times you wonder what is really happening, seemingly unpleasant things completely out of our control begin to come at us and we are expected to handle it unprepared. There is always something to deal with and nobody starts out with a smile in such times. I can imagine how Job felt. I have been through hard times and have met people who have but I personally don’t know anyone who has had Job’s experience. He really went through a lot. Not to worry there is always a way out. Here is God’s view on hard times.

The world promises trouble; “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). The world is designed to bring us tribulations, this because, Satan is the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4) and he wants to do everything to kill, steal and to destroy (John 10:10). He derives pleasure in antagonizing God’s perfect will for us (1 Corinthians 16:9, 1 Peter 5:8) and he wants us to live in lies. Don’t let the devil lie to you, God does not think of trouble not to talk of throwing it at us, that’s the devil’s job, in fact he can only afflict us if God permits. That exactly what happened in Jobs case (Job 1). The devil thought of it, suggested it, obtained permission and executed it. But why would God Permit such?

Fire is refining. Fire is destructive to many things like wood and plastic but for crude gold, it is refining. We are always crude with respect to our future and hence need refining from time to time. Fire is hot but it brings out the beauty in gold. I’m sure metals go through a lot when they are being smitten but it sharpens them for beauty and better use; Job came out of that hard time twice better. If you understand hard times, they will make you not break you. They would work for good; “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:23).

In hard times…

Trust God. God promises a way out; “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” ( 1 Corinthians 13:10).  God also promises peace through it all; “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Face it. Don’t run away from the refining fire, instead ask God to help you go through it allow it make you. Ask God for understanding, it will help stabilizes you and ensure your peace. Ask to be like this; “And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do…” (1 Chronicles 12:32a). This is the best time to stay with God and allow him teach us. It was at such a time that Jacob sort God alone and he wrestled and obtained his blessings. You need to go through it with God. Even when he seems silent, trust me he is right there making it better that it would have been. Just work with him and trust him, you will come out refined.
