There is a popular maxim that says, ‘dress as you want to be addressed’. This is the summary of how a Christian should dress. Normally, when the topic of dressing comes up as a Christian topic, it usually refers to how a Christian sister should dress. Whatever is the reason for this, Christian or modest dressing should include the brothers. The Word of God says all things should be done properly. “Let all things be done decently and in order” 1 Corinthians 14: 40. That means whether you are a brother or sister, your dressing should be decent and in order.
There are clans where Christian women wearing trousers are frowned at. Some churches made it their doctrine to forbid women from wearing trousers. They usually quote “A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God” Deuteronomy 22: 5. How misleading. First this verse is not referring to Christians but the family of Israel. Besides, the Christian is not under the Law. It is not also referring to trousers as in men’s clothing. I know these two positions will storm some religious folks, but that is good. Now in Moses days, the folks back them did not wear trousers rather they wore long flowing garments. So when did trousers become men’s wear? Even if the verse was referring to trousers, what about Deuteronomy 22: 9 – 11? Why do they ignore these verses and major on verse 5 to guilt Christian sisters?
Some have also argued that Christian sisters must cover their hair when praying. “But every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.” 1 Corinthians 11: 5. Did you notice that this verse talks about the woman’s head and not her hair? What is the function of the woman’s long hair? 1 Corinthians 11: 15, gives us the answer. “But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.” God has already graciously given the woman covering in her hair. Have you ever seen a woman who God did not answer her prayers because she did not cover her head or hair? Dressing cultural to a people! In Scotland, Fiji and parts of Africa, men wear skirts or wrapper. It is cultural to them. So to try to use a people’s dressing pattern as inhibition to serve God is a great sin. What is required in Christian dressing for both brothers and sisters is modesty. What you wear should not be dirty, rumple, revealing or torn. The Lord Jesus Christ said, “What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them” Matthew 15: 11. As a Christian Brother or Sister, do what is proper; do not allow anyone to yoke you with what God has not yoked you with. Praise God!
