How Can I Grow as a Christian?
It is the desire of every Christian to grow in their faith in Jesus Christ. Spiritual growth is important because it allows you to be more Christlike, serve God, and overcome the storms of life. The beauty of growing in your Christian faith is that God is there to help you along the way. He does not expect you to do it on your own, and that is why He sent His Spirit to help you. You can grow as a Christian by asking God to help you each day with His grace that is available in Christ.
There are many things you can do as a Christian so that you can grow spiritually and they include the following.
Meditating on the Word of God
God has given you His Word to help you grow as a Christian. As you read it, you understand more about your faith and what God expects of you. Your faith grows as you read the Word. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The more you read the Bible, the more your faith grows and the more you will see miracles in your life.
God’s Word will give you the wisdom you need for every situation you face in life. There are things you will not know how to do unless you turn to the Bible and look for the answers. Study the Word of God daily and meditate on what it means. You can use a daily devotional or Bible commentary to help you get the context of the Scriptures you are reading.
We communicate with God through prayer and build our relationship with Him. When you approach God with your requests, petitions, thanksgiving and praise, you are connecting with Him in a powerful way. You also give Him a chance to speak to you in response to your prayers. What matters is not the length of your prayer but its content. In Matthew 6:7, Jesus said that we should not pray with vain repetitions thinking that is when God will hear us. Your prayer can be short and to the point and God will answer it.
Prayer is pouring out your heart to God and telling Him the things that you cannot tell others. He is your heavenly Father who is glad to listen to you and minister to your heart. The cares of the day may weigh you down but when you leave them at the throne of grace, you will lighten your load in life. Prayer will help you trust in God more when you see Him answer your heartfelt prayers. As you trust God more, you will grow as a Christian and surrender more of your life to Him.
Meeting with Other Believers
When you meet with other believers in church or fellowship, you encounter God in a special way. You will see how God moves in the lives of others, and you will walk away believing He can do the same for you. As you share the Word of God with others, you will understand it better because you get to hear the way they have understood the Scriptures.
The early church met often and had a time of fellowship and they grew as Christians. “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:24). Meeting with other believers gives you a chance to pray with them and share what you have learned from the Bible. They too will share their experiences and you will learn a lot of things in God’s Word.
Listening to the Testimonies of Others
Testimonies are powerful because they show the power of God in the lives of others. When people share their life stories that show how God healed, delivered and saved them, others get inspired and their faith in God grows. Nowadays testimonies are readily available, whether in church, as videos or blog posts. They do not have to be of people you know but can be of other believers around the world.
You may hear a testimony of someone who overcome something you are struggling with and you will see a way out. Sometimes we get solutions from hearing others share their stories. As you share your testimony, you will give others a chance to see how God is working in your life. You will also grow as a Christian because you will realize that you have a greater impact than you think. Paul shared his testimonies of what Jesus had done for him and he greatly encouraged others (2 Corinthians 11:32-33).
Listening to Worship Music
Sometimes our souls need some soothing music to unwind and connect with God. When we worship God, we get into His presence and we lose ourselves in the uplifting music. Immersing ourselves in worship songs helps us connect with God in a deeper way, and understand His heart and desires. In the process we grow as Christians because we are close to the Father always. Getting into a lifestyle of worship keeps us focused on who God is and everything He is doing.
As you worship God, He moves in your life and you experience breakthrough from many obstacles in your life. As you spend time with God in worship through music, His joy will fill your heart. When this joy is present in your life despite your circumstances, you will not fall apart easily when faced with trying times. God is waiting on your worship and desires that you will worship Him in Spirit and truth (John 4:24).
The above are some of the ways you can grow as a Christian. Ask God to show you how you can grow in your faith because He knows the areas you need to grow first. Your Christian journey is unique and following God’s lead, you will grow in ways you never thought possible. Do not strive to grow on your own but rely on the grace of God which is sufficient for you.
