Ephesians 6:10-18 – Are You Dressed or Naked?

Finding Supernatural Covering Under God’s Armor. Ephesians 6:10-18.

Every blood-washed child of God has a kind of double existence, and while this is a mystery that cannot be understood by the world, we know that it is true. For example, we are living on the earth in our physical bodies, yet our spirits are functional in the spiritual world where Christ has given us great authority and dominion. We are often alone physically, but in the spirit we each have our guardian angels protecting us from evil. Much like every other normal person, we enjoy physical things like cars, electronic gadgets, beautiful houses and of course, good food and beautiful clothing; but in the spirit realm those things are not the true measure of our success.

The true measure of a Christian’s success has been predetermined by God, and these are called spiritual blessings (See Ephesians 1:3). How well you understand and practice the word of God and His will are some major factors that determine your true success in God’s sight. Remember, God is Spirit and does not see as men see. God places a higher priority on our spiritual growth, spiritual fitness, and spiritual health more than He does on our material success. To this end, He has made the resources we need available and needs us to make good use of them.

Embedded within the module of salvation are supernatural possibilities and realities that we must engage, explore, and express as sons of God. The book of Ephesians opens us up to the knowledge of the benefits, bounties, and blessings available in the Person of Christ, so Paul writes and tells us in Ephesians 6:10 to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His boundless might. He goes on to teach us about our advantages in Christ – which the natural man has no access to – that puts us right on the devil’s head!

Our Spiritual Armor

‘Put on the full armor of God [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemes and the strategies and the deceits of the devil.’ – Ephesians 6:11 AMP.

It’s pretty simple why God would provide us with spiritual armor; we are under attack! Whether you know it or not, satan with his other evil spirits is always looking to trip us up in our walk with God. He wants to attack our faith and steal our confidence in God. He wants to break our marriages and destroy our children’s destinies. He wants to lure us into sin so we could lose fellowship with the Father and the Son. He has a lot of tricks and pranks he has designed to get at God’s people but glory to God, our King is greater and wiser than the devil and has prepared strong and indestructible warfare equipment for us.

Standing Strong Against Evil

‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.’ – Ephesians 6:12 AMP.

You want to know the plain reason why men are bound in chains of sinful addictions? Evil powers! They are the same influence behind legalized abortion and pornography. They are the instigators of lust, violence, and religious terrorism. They seduce both men and women to be unfaithful to their marriage partners and also break up family units. They hate the church of God with so much passion – knowing that she is Christ’s bride and a place where the souls of men are set free from their evil operations – and so they always look for political voices to fight or discredit the church.

They hate righteousness, mercy, grace, and love, they hate harmony between people and always seek to bring division and rebellion. While they hate many things about the church, they only fear two things: Our prayers and Our praises! You see, when you pray, the works of darkness are undone; but when you praise, their works are destroyed by God’s power! God has given you armor as your complete spiritual-soldier equipment to withstand the enemy and knock off the works of darkness in your life.

Seven Pieces for our Peace

We are sons and daughters of the Creator King, and through Christ, we have been given what we need to stay victorious over the enemy and have peace in our lives. When we arise and take our place as sons of the kingdom of heaven, the devil will chicken out and go elsewhere to find a new victim.

We find the list of the seven pieces of our armor in Ephesians 6:14-18. Here Paul the Apostle borrows the descriptions of a Roman soldier’s ancient military outfit (except for the last piece on the list). For an easier understanding, I have tabulated the pieces of the armor and what they signify in the Christian’s life.

Seven Pieces of Armor                         Their Significance

The belt of truthLove and put the truth of God’s word into practice
The breastplate of righteousnessBelieve in your heart that your faith in Christ is your ticket to righteousness
The shoes of the gospel of peaceBe ready to preach the gospel to anyone at anytime
The shield of faithEngage the power of faith in resisting and quenching the devil’s attacks
The helmet of salvationNever forget that you have been saved by Christ’s blood.
The sword of the SpiritThe word of God in your mouth is a deadly weapon the enemy cannot withstand!
Constant praying in the Spirit and making intercessionPrayer opens us up to God’s power and the revelations of the Holy Spirit, showing us the hidden plans or works of the enemy

It doesn’t take a theologian to understand the symbolic meaning of these pieces of armor – they simply mean what you have just read. These seven pieces that make up our armor are more than enough for our victory and dominion over the works of darkness, but they are no good if we don’t put them on and use them. The safety and wellness of a soldier is in his skillfulness in handling his weapons and knowing the right time and place to use them against the enemy.

However, there is one of the pieces which would naturally seem to be a misfit in the list – which is the seventh one, praying in the spirit. This is because it is not necessary for natural soldiers to pray during warfare, so there is no way prayer can be part of their kits; but for the Christian who is a soldier of Christ, prayer is a necessity if you must win over satan’s strategies! Living a life of prayer is especially important for successful godly living. As a matter of fact, it is probably the most important pieces of God’s armor we are to put on!

So, while the rest of the armor are equally important, it is prayer that helps us stay dressed in the armor. A Christian who does not live a life of prayer and fellowship with God will soon find himself naked and open to the enemy’s attacks.

The Importance of Praying in the Spirit

‘Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.’ – Ephesians 6:18 NKJV

The Christian who makes the word of God the standard for living his life and rejects the lies of the enemy – which are sandwiched in-between ungodly philosophies, societal cultures, and [in some nations] governmental policies – is a dangerous threat to the enemy. His lifestyle of prayer, righteous conduct, selfless love, and bold preaching of the truth are so powerful that they will cause problems in the enemy’s kingdom!

So, the enemy will look for ways to stop your prayer life. He often does this by trying to keep you unnecessarily busy so as to distract you from prayer, or by tempting you to commit some sin. But whatever his schemes are, when you pray in the Spirit, the power of God would render them powerless and show you how to handle them. When you pray in the Spirit, you edify and strengthen your spirit, making it like a building constructed of iron and concrete! Yes, that is true.

‘But you, beloved, build yourselves up on [the foundation of] your most holy faith [continually progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], pray in the Holy Spirit’. – Jude 1:20 AMP.

The more you pray in the Spirit, the stronger and more rugged your spirit becomes. When you’re strong in your spirit, it becomes very difficult for the devil to manipulate you and it makes your spirit rise above the pressures of life and easily quenches arrows from the devil! It helps your spirit resist the magnetic pull of sin and draws the power and presence of God’s Spirit to help you overcome!

Take on God’s armor and watch as God’s Spirit makes a spiritual giant out of you!
